July NSAI Glasgow Chapter Zoom Meeting

Hi all

We look froward to catching up tonight at 7pm in our July Zoom Call

July meeting: (scroll down for Zoom meeting details)

Martha, Nayland and I have started taking turns in leading the sessions and this month falls on me :)
We follow the lead of our friends in NSAI Head Office on the topics we cover each month so this month we will be looking at July’s Key Topic : Production and Recording

The agenda for this month is:

1)VIDEO AND EXERCISE: Hit songwriter, Jeff Cohen, and NSAI Director, Bart Herbison, discuss the "do"s and "don’t"s of DEMO production. Discussion will follow.
2) VIDEO: Production & Recording - What to Know with Akil Thompson
Discussion will follow on the ‘new way’ of approaching production & recording in the world of Covid19, sharing experiences and ideas on working in this area online or at a distance.
3) Look at July’s exercises (below) on Production and Recording and discuss.
4) Any other NSAI-related business.

PRODUCTION & RECORDING
"If you had a sign above every studio door saying, 'This Studio is a Musical Instrument,' it would make such a different approach to recording." – Brian Eno

EXERCISES:

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Make a list of 2-3 of some of your favorite artists and research the producers behind their best work. Create a mix similar to the feel of one of these artists using only 5-6 instruments.

2. GET MIC’D UP!

Got a way to record at home? Get mic’d up and test your sound. Find the best places in your space to record your vocals. Listen back to your vocals and how they sound. Are you too close to the mic or not close enough? The best way to get comfortable with tech is by working with it.

3. LEARN THE TERMS

You don't have to be a whiz in the studio, but it doesn't hurt to familarize yourself with some technical terms. Recording – be it at home or in a studio is something doesn't have to be unfamilar terrority. And when you start to look at the basics, there are a few terms that you will keep coming across – a glossary of recording and audio terms. Take the time to learn a few of the these terms.
