Mary Lauren graduated summa cum laude from the music business program at Belmont University and later earned her law degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her career in law began with a wide array of entertainment-related matters, including copyright infringement cases and estate planning and probate for entertainers, before focusing solely on transactional music law at Loeb & Loeb, LLP.
In 2019, she launched Dotted i Entertainment, managing a Grammy-award-winning artist and a producer/songwriter. Through her experiences practicing law and managing clients, she developed a diverse wealth of knowledge regarding all facets of the entertainment business, including not only music-related endeavors but also television, film, and book publishing.
As an adjunct professor at Belmont from 2017 to 2020, Mary Lauren fell in love with teaching and being back on Belmont’s campus. In 2020, she joined Belmont’s full-time faculty as an Assistant Professor of Music Business. At Belmont, she teaches Survey of Music Business, Music Publishing, and Internship & Career Foundations. She is passionate about educating the next generation of industry leaders. Her article, “Keeping America Singing: Key Entertainment and Music Industry Themes During and Post-Pandemic” was published in the 2021 edition of the Music & Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) journal, and her paper, “Same Song, Different Verse: Evolution of the Entertainment and Music Industry in the COVID Era” was presented at the 2022 International Summit of MEIEA. She has been selected to present two additional papers at the 2023 International Summit of MEIEA later this year. Additionally, she serves on the Catalog & Curriculum committee for Belmont’s Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business, ensuring that students are offered classes that focus on today’s most cutting-edge and pressing entertainment issues.
With a heart for helping others, Mary Lauren is involved in many organizations in the Middle Tennessee community. She currently serves as Membership Co-Chair of SOURCE, Nashville’s longest running organization for women in the music business, on its Board of Directors. She also served for the past five years on the leadership team of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Troubadour Society Advisory Council, chairing the Council in 2019 and 2020. As a member of the Tennessee Bar Association’s entertainment section, she has served on the Executive Council for the past seven years, planning and participating in continuing legal education (CLE) seminars for entertainment attorneys across Tennessee. She is a proud alumna of the Society of Leaders in Development (SOLID) and the Davidson County Young Leaders Council, previously serving on the Board of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville. She currently volunteers with Siloam Health Nashville, serving as a resource and friend for a local Afghan refugee family.
She has been honored by the Nashville Business Journal as one of Nashville’s “Top 40 Under 40” and a recipient of the “Women in Music City” award. She was named to the “Up Next” list of emerging leaders in entertainment law in Variety’s “Legal Impact Report” and as a “Rising Star in Entertainment & Sports” by Mid-South Super Lawyers. Additionally, she was a Nashville Emerging Leader Award finalist, selected for the GRAMMY Next Class by the Nashville Chapter of the Recording Academy, and selected for MusicRow’s “Next Big Thing” music industry directory.
