The Memphis Chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International facilitated two songwriting sessions with local children participating in Project Transformation, a summer enrichment experience that includes activities to enhance participants’ reading skills. On June 25th, Yolanda Harper, Melinda Buchanan, and Brian Ford worked with the 1st - 3rd grade group to write, “All the Things we Like.” On July 15th, Yolanda Harper, Melinda Buchanan, and Amber Rae Dunn Craven worked with the 4th - 5th grade group to write, “About Us.” Kali, a participant who was not particularly excited about singing and songwriting, brightened up when Yolanda suggested the young girl design the “CD” cover and title the song. Included is the “CD” cover Kali drew for “About Us.”
A SHOUT OUT to Melinda Buchanan who facilitated communication with the camp staff and our Memphis Chapter volunteers to enable us to give the children this experience!
In addition to providing content for the lyrics, the children choreographed dances to their songs, and at least one learned to play the song on the piano. The children were active, engaged, positive and a delight to work with!
