As evidenced by the Devin Dawson video and the interviews with publishers from last month, a lot of record deals stem from an initial publishing deal. Bearing that in mind, does this affect how you might approach a publisher and what songs you might play for them, should you get a meeting?
Set Some Goals
Think about yourself as an artist and/or songwriter and what you want to accomplish. Would a major record deal (or publishing deal) line up with those goals? You might have more creative control by putting out your own music or possibly signing a deal with an “indie” label or publisher. As stated in the video, publishers often tackle development of new artists and writers. What steps could you take on your own to further develop and make yourself more appealing to a label or publisher?
